The way it works in school

Think back to school a moment. What was the way to succeed?

You did the assignments the teacher told you. You knew that if you put a good effort into it, you'd be rewarded with a good grade.

 

 

The way it works as an employee

Think back to your first job. What was the way to succeed?

You did whatever the boss told you to do. You knew that if you put in a good effort to get the task done, you'd be rewarded with a steady paycheck.

 

 

The way we've been taught to think

We've all been taught from kindergarten on that if you do what you're assigned, a reward will inevitably follow.

 

The problem this creates in your business

Now, let's look at your business. Nobody assigns tasks to you. Nobody hands out rewards for doing those tasks.

Nature abhors a vaccum. So what happens? Your "inner employee" putters around, waiting for some clear direction to follow.

You read some stuff on business building. One article says you should do one thing. So you start doing it. You read a different article. It tells you to do something else. So you set aside what you were doing and try that.

You spin your wheels because each time someone tells you do something, your "inner employee" kicks in and reacts like you did to your teacher or to your boss. It does whatever task it is told. Then it waits eagerly for the expected reward.

 

But in running a business, it doesn't work that way!

 

Letting random article writers set your business agenda for you is a recipe for failure. But it's a typical part of what I've come to see as the two business-killing pitfalls that the gurus aren't helping you overcome.

 

 

Two business-killing pitfalls that NOBODY'S doing anything about

You'd think the gurus would be all over these two pitfalls with guidance and support to help you overcome them.

 

It's not happening.

 

With all the products the gurus are pitching, they're only dancing around those pitfalls, not really helping you get past them.

 

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that all online business gurus are bad. I've learned a lot from several of them. I hold a select few in high regard as good guys who simply don't see the pitfalls for themselves.

 

Why the gurus overlook these pitfalls

See, most of those gurus are people who went into their businesses thinking like entrepreneurs pretty much right from the start. That was the advantage that allowed them to succeed more quickly.

For whatever reason, they hadn't gotten locked into the task/reward mindset that gets drilled into everyone in a lifetime of schooling. They were able to adapt instinctively to the way of thinking they needed for their business.

 

They look at those who don't get results, and they don't see the disconnect in mindset because they didn't need to shift their mindset as much as others do.

They don't recognize exactly what it is that causes others to get stuck.

 

Granted, some of them make attempts to address some of the symptoms of these pitfalls. They usually do that, though, only in big-bucks programs that are out of reach for those who need it most, with monthly dues of over $500 per month.

 

And if they address the heart of this matter at all, they do it in throwaway remarks. They treat the symptoms instead of the disease behind them.

For the most part, I see marketing teachers pushing tactics and strategies. Tactics and strategies are easy to sell to people whose minds are stuck in an employee mindset.

Buying tactics and strategies fits right in with thinking that says, "If I just do the task I'm told to do, I'll get paid for my effort."

Successful entrepreneurs, though, think differently. They base their decisions on factors that in no way resemble the old, employee mindset with which most of us grew up.

That's what kills many new businesses before they even get started.
