The first step is to find out what it is. It's the employee mindset that is drilled into us throughout our schooling and our employee years. It's the mindset that expects that running a business will produce results by following the same patterns we followed as students or employees.

In reality, though, running a business calls for a dramatically different mindset and a dramatically different way of doing things. The ways we approached our work as students or as employees simply don't work as business owners.

Yet most small business owners try to fit that square peg of employee mindset into the round hole of running a business. And the results are sky-high business failure rates.

Getting around the employee mindset trap

Even recognizing the difference between an employee mindset and an entrepreneur mindset is not easy. The differences are not obvious if what you've known all your life is a deeply engrained employee mindset.
