What Is Your Computer Doing Behind Your Back?
Get better performance out of your computer by weeding out unnecessary processes
Has this happened to you? You're working on your computer when your firewall program pops up telling you that svchost.exe (or some other alphabet soup of a file name) is trying to access the Internet. It asks you if you want to allow it.
If you don't already know what that program is, you're likely to be torn with doubt. Do you allow it and risk allowing it to do god knows what, or do you block it and risk messing up some perfectly normal function that your computer needs to carry out?
Many of these programs are part of the normal running of your computer. Others are little add-ons that software you installed opens every time you start your computer to make it easy (and unavoidable) for you to use the software whether you planned to or not.
And then there are other processes that are part of spyware programs or worse.
How to find out what these processes are
You can find out what all these little processes are on the handy search tool at right. Type in the file name of the process and click Search Now! to get a description of what the process is, what it does, and whether it's something safe to run.
Just be sure to type it in correctly. Developers of dangerous processes often try to disguise their files with names similar to those of useful processes. For example, svchost.exe is a necessary process that helps your computer function properly; scvhost.exe is a dangerous trojan horse that can compromise all your passwords and personal information.
So bookmark this page and refer back to it whenever you want to know what a process on your computer does. We'll be happy to steer you in the right direction.
