Seven Steps to Starting a Successful Online Business

Seven Steps to Starting a Successful Small Business Online

Step 1: Base your Internet business on something you love

Think you need to sell iPods or Louis Vuitton handbags because somebody told you they're hot? DON'T! Unless you they are something you deeply know and love.

You sell best what is part of who you are.

Believe it or not, you can actually make lots more money online by selling even seemingly obscure things that you know and love than you can by selling the hottest selling items that you don't.

So before you make even the tiniest step toward setting up your small business online, first make a thorough assessment of what you know about, what you enjoy. Then limit all ideas for your online business to only those areas.

Step 2: Learn what the buyers who share you interests are looking for

Once you've narrowed your choices, think of all the problems that people who share your passion for whatever you love encounter with that passion. Think of what they need; think of what problems they'd like solved.

(This is why you have more success selling what you know and love than merely what's hot. You know exactly how people are thnking in an area that you love; in an area you don't, you can only make a wild guess.)

Brainstorm the words and phrases those people might use to find solutions to those needs. Research (don't worry, I can show you how) how often those keywords are used on the search engines and how many other sites are competing for those searchers.

Look especially for keywords that have higher demand and lower supply. Those are where you'll get your most buyers.

Once you've done all this, you have:

  • A problem you know people want solved
  • A good idea where you can find those people

That combination gives you two-thirds of what you need for your small business to make money online.

Step 3: Choose the type of Internet business website that best meets both your buyers' needs and your own

The third thing you need is:

  • A way of solving the problem that rewards you for your help

And that's what you find in step 3.

Start looking at what online small business model will allow you to solve their problem while making money in return.

Don't assume you need to follow a particular small business model. There are plenty of business models to choose from. Research and see which model and what kind of products fit you—and your buyers—best.

Step 4: Learn the nuts and bolts of your Internet business

Having completed these three steps, you now have a viable business plan that you know you can earn money with.

NOW you're finally ready to start the steps that most new business owners start with. NOW's the time to start learning html and buying your domain name and all the other technical matters you need to know for your business.

Step 5: Create your Internet small business to establish an ongoing relationship with your buyers

In starting your small business online, you want to do more than just slap up a bunch of products and expect your visitors to do their part and buy.

You want to set yourself apart from the many other options they have and build a relationship with your buyers. Set your online business up to establish an ongoing relationship with them. It will make the difference between buyers who only think of buying and then wander off elsewhere, and loyal, repeat buyers who buy and buy again.

Step 6: Promote your Internet business to attract more buyers

By this point, you finally have your business up and running online. But starting a small business online isn't a one-shot thing. You don't slap up your business and then sit back while money rolls in.

You grow your online business by promoting it, choosing from the many tools to find the best ones to keep bringing in new buyers.

Step 7: Track and test EVERYTHING so your website grows ever more effective

By now, your online small business is running and bringing you income. But the funny thing about business online is that no matter how well you think you know exactly what will meet your buyers' needs and persuade them to buy, there's always more that you can improve.

That's why you want to test and track everything in your business to remove the bumps that drive your visitors off your sales path and smooth the way for more of them to buy. Even the best-producing online businesses can always do better.
