Review of ClickTracks Referrer Log Analysis Software
Log file analysis tool that lets you see exactly how your visitors navigate your site
Let me get one thing straight before we start. I don't believe a referrer log analysis tool is the first thing you should get as soon as you start your web business. That doesn't mean, though, that it's something to ignore.
You can learn a lot that can make your business more profitable by uncovering what your visitors are doing on your website. You need the information that a good website analytics tool can give you.
The question is, will ClickTracks give you the kind of information you need?
What's different about ClickTracks
Other log file analysis software give you bare facts—how many people visited, where they came from, what browsers and operating systems they used. Somewhat useful, but not much depth to them. ClickTracks, on the other hand, lets you see the choices they make on each page of your site.
It takes you to the page itself and shows you where your visitors came from and where they went next on your site. It shows you exactly how many people clicked each link. That's data you can't get from other analytics programs!
Track any group of visitors you want
And there's more. Want to see just how your pay-per-click visitors navigate your site? Or just those who buy? You can define almost any type of group to see their behavior on your site. The possibilities are limitless of what you can track with ClickTracks.
Very visual and easy to understand
The fact that ClickTracks shows you this data right on your pages makes it easy to see what links are most popular and which are least on each page. And there's so much you can do with it that it's hard to put into words how it works.
It's easier to show you a short video that runs you through the major features of ClickTracks and let you see for yourself.
Easier to learn than I expected
True, with as much as ClickTracks can do, it can be a little intimidating at first. But it's easier to learn than you might think.
I spent some time playing around with ClickTracks on my own when I first got it. A couple of days later, when I called in on a training teleconference they offered to new owners, I already knew all the basics and could use the teleconference to pick up more advanced techniques.
Be careful that you don't lose sight of your goals
The only negative—if you can call it that—is that ClickTracks can give you so much information that you can easily find yourself wondering where to begin, especially if your site has a lot of pages.
I suggest you start with the basic statistics. Set up a few key visitor groups (such as free search engine vs. PPC traffic). You'll find that what you discover leads you ask to other questions.
Then use ClickTracks to answer those questions. If's great for showing where visitors are choosing to go on your site and where they aren't. Then use that information to give them more of what they want and keep them engaged with your site.
Is ClickTracks right for you?
Like, I said earlier, a good web analytics program like ClickTracks should not be your first priority when you first get online. Unfortunately, it's not free.
But once you have your site established, ClickTracks can help take it to the next level by showing you your site through the eyes of those who are visiting it.
It offers you an in-depth view of your site far beyond what some bigger-name, but less versatile referrer log file software can bring you, and does it at a fraction of the cost.
ClickTracks has shown me things about the sites I've done that I would never have known any other way.
