Seven Steps to Starting a Successful Online Business

"Make Your Content PREsell" Review

Can this free ebook really turn the way you write for your customers upside down?

Make Your Content PREsell doesn't deal with traditional copywriting. Author Ken Evoy has nothing against copywriting. He's written or co-written several books on copywriting himself.

But he feels passionately that most other copywriting books do more harm than good when you try to use their traditional copywriting on most business sites. He passionately believes that entirely different factors apply when you're writing for a site that sells products indirectly (such as affiliate sites, referral sites, and even informational sites).

He sees a huge difference between writing to sell and writing to presell. The two questions are:

  • Is he right?
  • Does Make Your Content PREsell! do a good job of showing how to write in this dramatically different way?

A convincing argument

Evoy makes a convincing argument that indirect sales sites (such as affiliate sites or referral sites) actually lose money by employing traditional copywriting techniques. Traditional copywriting focuses on getting the sale, right there, right now.

Even when a sales page is masterfully written, there's still no mistaking that the writer is trying to persuade you to buy. But is that the feeling you want your readers to have when you don't even have the product available to sell them?

You cannot sell them the product directly. You don't have it. You need to send them somewhere else to close the sale. All you can ask of them is to make a commitment to CONSIDER the product further.

People don't want to get sold on something. They want to feel that they are making the decision themselves. When they feel that someone is ramming something down their throats, they raise their defenses.

Do you want to ask them -- with their defenses raised -- to go somewhere else for yet another sales talk? Or do you want to defuse their defenses before you invite them to go and learn more about the product?

What preselling is

When people come to your website, they see you as an anonymous person behind an unfamiliar website. It's nothing personal; they just don't know you yet.

In preselling you're encouraging them to see you as a respected expert whose opinion they trust.

In other words, proper preselling can make the difference between visitors hitting their Back button or giving you the response that you want.

It's hard to argue with the logic of preselling. So the question then becomes, does this book help you do it effectively

Does "Make Your Content PREsell!" help you presell effectively?

Make Your Content PREsell! is surprisingly detailed for a free ebook. In fact, at over 150 pages, it's absolutely amazing how much you get for free.

It shows how to:

  • Identify your target audience and provide them with exactly the kind of content they're looking for
  • Develop a look and feel for your site that will build your credibility with your target audience
  • Unlearn the grade school writing habits that lead us to presell ineffectively
  • Write the way that people naturally read online (it's different than how they read offline!)
  • Speak TO your target audience and not just AT them
  • Organize what you write so it draws people through to the response you want them to make (such as purchase, signup, click to an affiliate site, etc.)

Not just theory

And this is not just theory. Evoy teaches you how to presell from every angle. He gives you:

  • Detailed how-to instructions
  • Explanations
  • Case studies
  • Analogies
  • Insights on writing from other successful site owners

He wants you to "get it" and does everything he can to break ineffective writing habits and replace them with solid preselling.

Dramatic case study

He even has an extended case study in which he walks you through the decisions he helped his 14-year-old daughter to make when she came to him with an idea for a website of her own. He shows what went into building a simple -- but effective -- website, using the same preselling techniques he teaches in Make Your Content PREsell!

Now, a 14-year-old building a website isn't any big deal. But consider that she now earns from that website -- for two hours a week of basic maintenance -- over $1,000 a month.

That's way more than she could earn for 40 hours a week at the types of burger-flipping jobs that most teens are stuck in. (Note: the $1,000 figure mentioned in the book is long since obsolete. She recently reported that her income has grown to over $2,000 a month as her site has grown. Not bad for two hours a week!)

Is Make Your Content PREsell! right for you?

I'll have to admit that I found Make Your Content PREsell! pretty familiar. I learned many of the things Evoy teaches by trial and error over the course of several years.

If you already have years of experience and a solid understanding of the need to presell before you sell, this book isn't necessarily for you. Similarly, if your business does direct sales of its own products, you might be better off with Evoy's Make Your Words Sell or Netwriter's Master Course, which focus more on direct sales copywriting.

But if you haven't already learned these lessons of PREselling through trial and error (and the years of lower results than what I could have enjoyed), Make Your Content PREsell! can shave years off of your learning curve.

Even now, I envy the clarity with which Evoy crystalizes the whole subject. I've written a number of articles on preselling (before I started using the name that Evoy calls it), but I've never nailed the concept as thoroughly as he does.

The thing, though, that amazes me most about this book, is that Evoy could easily sell it for $29.95, or $47 or even $67 like most copywriting ebooks out there.

Instead, he charges nothing for it. Why? He's passionate about the whole concept of preselling. He could easily charge any of those prices and it would still be worth it, but he wants to get his philosophy of preselling out to a marketing world that largely overlooks it. And he figures that once you're exposed to his philosophy of building a business, you'll come back to him for more.

At any rate, it can definitely improve whatever results you seek on your site.

I rate it a 10 out of 10
